Brass Band Northwest opens our season with a bang featuring one of the very few works originally written for brass band that received such notoriety that it was transcribed for more common ensembles: The Year of the Dragon by Philip Sparke. Sparke wrote Year of the Dragon as a tribute to Wales, which features a dragon on its national flag. Our program mixes Welsh composers and music about dragons. Images in Brass features musical pictures.   Arthur Butterworth wrote Three Impressions about scenes from 19th century Northumberland and include Wylam Colliery, Deserted Farm, and the Royal Border Bridge, Berwick Upon Tweed 1859. Regarding Luminosity, Nancy Galraithe writes, "The title (a pun on "luminous city") alludes to the bright, shimmering character of the music created through rich, lively brass textures, and the colorful interplay of piano and mallet instruments (vibraphone, xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel, crotales)." Debussy is noted for his ability to depict…
