Every year from 2003 to 2014, Brass Band Northwest presented the Northwest Brass Band Festival in late January, hosting bands from California to British Columbia. Beginning in 2015, the Festival moved to early March and became the Northwest Brass Festival, co-presented by Brass Band Northwest and Common Tone Arts. For 2017, the Festival will take place on Saturday, March 11. Venues will be Seattle Pacific University and First Free Methodist Church in Seattle (see below).
The Festival provides a full day of opportunities for brass bands and brass students to observe, participate, rehearse, and perform with national and internationally renowned brass artists and clinicians. Student soloists up university undergraduate level can compete for prizes in the College and High School/Middle School solo competition divisions, with the opportunity to be critiqued by the guest clinicians and artists.
Past Festival guest soloists, conductors, and clinicians have included Jens Lindemann, James Gourlay, Helen Tyler Harrelson, Patrick Sheridan, Mark Gould, Philip Sparke, James Curnow, Deanna Swoboda, Salvatore Scarpa, Douglas Yeo, Jamie Hood, David Gordon, Stephen Bulla, Charles Villarrubia, Stephen Fissel, Allen Vizzutti, and Stephen Arthur Allen.
Guest conductor for the 2017 Festival will be Michael Garasi, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra, Resident Conductor of the internationally acclaimed Brass Band of Battle Creek (MI), and former Music Director of the Brass Band of Central Florida. Guest soloists and clinicians will include Scott Hartman, trombone instructor at Yale University and international soloist and clinician; and Alexander White, recently appointed 3rd/Assistant Principal trumpet for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.
The Festival day ends with the evening Gala Brass Band Concert, with each participating brass band performing a 20-minute set, an appearance by the Festival Brass Ensemble, and a performance by the Festival guest soloist, Scott Hartman, accompanied by Brass Band Northwest.
